Every day LGBT employees face discrimination in their place of employment because of their real or perceived sexual orientation and/or gender identity. While federal law protects against employment discrimination based on race, gender, religion, national origin and disability, there are no federal laws that protect LGBT people from discrimination in the workplace.
Discrimination goes beyond firing practices. It also includes the denial of domestic partnership benefits and the imposition of additional tax burdens for those who are able to secure domestic partnership benefits.
Many local jurisdictions and companies in the private sector are taking action to promote workplace equality and fairness.
